We asked SRPC Members Dr. Adam Mildenberger and Dr. Kathryn Wood a few questions and here is what they had to share. Both in their first year in Peace River, AB.
|
|
|
|
|
Adam was born and raised in Beaverlodge Alberta and Kathryn is from Edmonton. They met in medical school at the University of Alberta. Both interested in rural family medicine and went on to do their residency in Grande Prairie. They both did fellowships; Kathryn in surgery and Adam in anesthesia, and now work in Peace River, AB.
They did their rural integrated clerkship in Peace River and fell in love with how beautiful the river valley is and how supportive the healthcare community are.
The breadth of work is what drew them to family medicine. "You never know what will walk through your doors or what one week to the next will be."
Both joined the SRPC as medical students. "At the time, all of the discounts and member benefits were what drew us in as poor students. I really enjoy the Canadian Journal of Rural Medicine as the articles are often things I use in my regular practice and feel I learn the most compared to other journals." |

Dr. Mildenberger closes with "I often feel like there's cases where I could have done better or hear of larger centres commenting on cases coming in from rural areas. This reminds me that we are the front line workers in the arena trying our best." |

Canadian Health Coalition Pharmacare Now Statement
|
The CHC is calling for a public, universal pharmacare program that covers medication in the same way as doctors and hospitals.
The SRPC is one 150+ national and provincial organizations that signed the Pharmacare Now Statement calling on the new federal government to immediately implement universal, public pharmacare.

Remembering Dr. Wieslaw Rawluk
|
A post to RuralMed by Dr. Gabe Woollam that we wanted to share.
I wanted to send a short note to let everyone know about the passing of Dr Wieslaw Rawluk on November 30. As many of you from across the country have reached out over the past few days, I’ve realized how broad his impact has been. There are great stories coming from every corner of the country.
Dr Rawluk was the solo Obstetrician/Gynecologist in Goose Bay, Labrador, for nearly 30 years. He was a proud card-carrying member of the SRPC and spoke at a number of our conferences. He retired in Dec 2017.
His presence in the community really helped to strengthen the comfort of many learners and young physicians to practice rural obstetrics. He would come in at all hours without question and helped us out of many hair-raising situations. A true mentor and role model in many ways. I never heard him grumble about being on call 24/7.
Dr Rawluk was a strong advocate for his patients and fought hard for those who may not have had as strong a voice themselves.
Of potentially equal importance Dr Rawluk also helped many of our local docs broaden their horizons by teaching them about mushroom hunting and Jazz. He was a larger than life character and a true gentleman.
He will be missed!

JSC ANNOUNCEMENT: Stipend funding available for BC rural physicians for 2020 SRPC Conference. If you are a practicing BC rural physician who is interested in confirming your eligibility to receive the stipend, please email: RuralPrograms@doctorsofbc.ca. Stipends will be reimbursed for eligible rural physicians after the event with submit of a claim form and proof of registration. Claims must be submitted no later than July 25, 2020.
