SRPC Essay Contest for Students & Residents |
Each year the SRPC's Nominations and Awards Committee host a rural essay contest for medical students and residents. Students, send us a self-reflection from your elective in rural medicine. Residents, send us a self reflection from your experience in rural medicine. The winners will win the equivalent of $500 (students) / $1000 (residents) credited towards the cost of attending SRPC's 29th Annual Rural & Remote Medicine Course.

SRPC Research Poster Contest
|
Each year, a rural research poster session is hosted at the SRPC's Rural & Remote Conference. Poster proposals must include a clear research purpose, objectives, methodology, summary of the research results and conclusion. The posters will be judged on rural relevance, research methodology, impact, clarity of presentation and your ability to answer questions regarding your research.
SRPC students and residents will have the opportunity of being awarded the best research poster. The winner of the best research poster will win the equivalent of $500 credited towards attending the conference.

The SRPC Newfoundland and Labrador Committee
|
The SRPC Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Committee recently reached out to the Health Accord NL Task Force to establish a collaborative relationship during its work on health care reform in the province. As the SRPC is an important stakeholder in these efforts, the NL Committee should be consulted and engaged by the Health Accord NL Task Force for change planning and implementation. NL Committee members prepared and submitted a statement to this group, highlighting concerns and calls for action for various items that affect rural physicians in NL. Important themes of the statement included marginalization, physician resource planning, medical homes concept, “passive resettlement,” and economic driver. A response to the statement was received from the Health Accord NL Task force, and a meeting between the two groups to discuss its contents has been arranged.

SRPC Featured Member - Dr. Sarah Newbery
|
|
|
Dr. Sarah Newbery has been a rural generalist family physician in Marathon for 25 years, since arriving there with her family physician partner, Eli Orrantia in 1996. She grew up in the community of Hazelton, in Northern BC, where she was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by the remarkable group of rural family physicians who lived and worked there at that time. Now, she takes her inspiration from the group of rural generalist family physicians she works with and with whom she lives in community - raising kids, exploring the North Shore, learning and adapting their practice to the needs of the community - together.

As a group, they provide obstetrical care, ER, inpatient, palliative
care, run the COVID 19 assessment centre, run a RAAM clinic, have
several rural research projects on the go, and are involved in giving
voice to rural health issues at system leadership tables. More broadly, she is grateful for all that she has learned through rural
family physicians across the country. “Here in Marathon, we probably
have more in common with family docs in Haida Gwai and Baie Verte Nfld,
than we do have with urban colleagues in Ontario. The SRPC has been
instrumental in helping me to connect with rural generalist family
physicians in other places - to learn from them and adapt some of their
successes to our local context. I’ve felt supported by so many SRPC
initiatives and been delighted by the student and resident leadership
within the SRPC. I’m really proud to be part of this organization.” |

Rural Research Feature - CIHR Rural Focus Group
|
SRPC, in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Health Services and Policy Research, held an invitational focus group session in October with researchers, providers, and decision-makers across Canada. The focus was a discussion on integrating care for rural populations to inform the development of a new research initiative that will support the improvement of the design, delivery, and scale of integrated models of care for better health of all Canadians.
This research initiative is based on integrated care identified as a priority for research investment in CHIR’s strategic plan: Accelerate Health Care System Transformation through Research to Achieve the Quadruple Aim and Health Equity for All. Participants provided their perspectives and experiences regarding integrating care in the rural context and advice on the role of research in achieving integrated care in the rural context that transforms the health system and delivers better patient outcomes.
Discussion outcomes will further inform CIHR’s work in a potential funding research opportunity in the coming months. SRPC will continue discussions with CIHR in exploring ways to build rural health research capacity in informing evidence-based policy making for better equitable access to rural health care.
In an interview with TVOntario, Dr. Sarah Newbery (a participant at this CIHR focus group) described key elements to facilitating integrated health care in northern Ontario rural communities.

Funding is Available for Patient-Oriented Research |
NL SUPPORT and Quality of Care NL are excited to announce that funding is available for graduate students and health professionals who are interested in conducting patient-oriented research. At least one grant for each funding opportunity will be designated for research led by an Indigenous student/health professional or in partnership with an Indigenous community.
A maximum of $14,000/year for masters students and $18,000/year for PhDs. Click here for details, guidelines and application materials.

REAP Sponsorship Opportunities for Rural Focused Medical Conferences |
The Rural Education Action Plan (REAP) provides sponsorship to UBC medical students and family medicine, specialty and subspecialty residents to attend provincial and national rurally-focused medical conferences each year. Students and residents who have an interest in exploring rural medicine may apply for up to $1,200 for travel and accommodation expenses plus conference registration.

The pandemic has taken a toll on the emotional and physical well-being of physicians, medical learners and health care workers across Canada. Many have had to cope with an increase or exacerbation of anxiety, burnout or other health challenges related to increasingly difficult workplace conditions.
Their toolkit adapted from a model created by the Canadian Armed Forces includes proven wellness services and resources to support you at this stage of the pandemic. We are happy to share it with you.
Being stressed or overwhelmed can make it hard to recognize when we need support. They have a mental health continuum model for physicians to check in with yourself. |
