Dr. Keith MacLellan represented the SRPC at the Canadian Space Agency’s Advisory Council. The group was tasked with looking into the synergies between the health needs of humans in deep space and those in rural and remote parts of Canada.
In December, The Canadian Space Agency released Health Beyond - The Report of the Advisory Council on Deep-Space Healthcare.
In this report the SRPC is named as a primary partner for the early implementation stages of the project. We are listed as a health practitioner sector, representing front-line health care practitioners. An ad hoc committee had been formed, lead by Dr. Ryan Falk, to work with the CSA should this initiative take off.
We will do our utmost to support the CSA in helping us bring quality care closer to home.

Vanessa reviews the case of a female patient who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the age of 12. The case highlights how ASD is often diagnosed later in patients, particularly female patients, who meet most early social and emotional development milestones, but have more telling symptoms during early adolescence. |

Position Statement: Research and Reconciliation with Indigenous People in Rural Health Journals.
|
Published simultaneously in the Canadian Journal of Rural Medicine, the Australian Journal of Rural Health, and Rural and Remote Health, January 2022. Indigenous Peoples' cultural knowledge should be treated with respect, regardful of the diversity of their/our Nations and cultural strengths. However, rural health research publishing is guilty of silencing Indigenous Peoples through discursive practices such as author credentials. Therefore, we - a collaboration of Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars - declare, 'nothing about Indigenous Peoples, without Indigenous Peoples.

Guide to Integrating Quality Improvement Into Family Medicine Residency Programs
|
The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is thrilled to announce the Guide to Integrating Quality Improvement Into Family Medicine Residency Programs has now been finalized and is available on their website.
The guide will be a valuable resource for departments of family medicine across the country as they implement the Residency Training Profile and prepare graduates for a comprehensive career in family medicine that includes practice improvement.
We would also like to share with you some recently produced videos by the CFPC that we hope will be helpful in encouraging the uptake of research and quality improvement by students, residents, and physicians in practice. The first video titled The Researcher in Every Family Physician: Nurturing a Culture of Curiosity discusses how research is an integral part of family medicine. CFPC's Outcomes of Training Report
|
The CFPC released its Outcomes
of Training Report on January 26th. This expansive work by the CFPC is in early stages and we
acknowledge the suggestion from the CFPC that changes evolving from
this report are unlikely to occur prior to at least five years
hence. The SRPC remains clear in our collaboration with the CFPC -
as always, our primary focus is to ensure a robust and prepared
generalist workforce to serve Canadian rural and remote
communities. The CFPC is in the process of establishing an Education Reform Task Force to look at the design elements and training, and the SRPC will have a seat at this table. This representative will be an SRPC member and have rural education and leadership experience, among other potential attributes. A reporting mechanism with SRPC Executive will be in place to ensure representation is in alignment with members needs. My Name is Deepak Sangha, PGY 2 at MUN in the NORFAM program based out of the big land, Labrador. What really drew me to Labrador was the opportunity to participate in flight medicine and training to become a rural generalist. What excites me about working in Happy Valley Goose Bay is the variety of cases that we see on daily basis and ample learning opportunities. Working with indigenous populations in Labrador, especially along the coast, has truly been an eye opening and culturally rich adventure. Rural and remote medicine here truly makes you challenge yourself, and offers a great robust learning experience. Working in Labrador not only has made me a better physician but it has also taught me how to provide patient centred care with limited resources. Being a member of the SRPC has also provided me with various opportunities to partake in continuing medical education which have allowed me to better aid my patients. I believe the SRPC has done an astounding job in being a voice for rural physicians and advocating for our needs and the needs of our patients.

|
There is very little research available regarding the health outcomes of LGBTQ2S+ people living in rural and remote areas in Canada.
SRPC student members Adrian Witol (LGBTQ2S+ Health Student Rep) and Anchaleena Mandal (Co-chair Student Committee.) have created an introduction to LGBTQ2S+ Health in Rural Canada handout sheets.
It highlights facts from the literature about the demographics and risk factors pertinent to the health and well being of this under-researched population. They also list several web pages and organizations that might be helpful to your practise or your patients.
