RISE: Rural and Isolated Support Endeavor
|
|
|
The ongoing pandemic is a difficult time for everyone, especially for some of your patients. Rural Canadians are particularly vulnerable to further isolation, therefore, Canadian medical students have stepped up to stand by our susceptible population. RISE is a student-run, phone support program with the goal to provide emotional support to Canadians who live in rural areas and are feeling the negative impacts of isolation. Our initiative matches medical students with clients to provide weekly check-ins and social connection virtually, or via telephone. As the second wave is approaching, we continue to accept new clients. We hope to help our rural population stay socially connected and supported! |

Calling All Rural Residents
The SRPC Rural Residency Committee is looking for a PGY1 to become co-chair and new members from across the country to join the committee.
What do we do?
Liaise with SRPC committees and help give a resident perspective.
Create and host sessions for the famous Rural and Remote conference.
We recently created a video and info page with FAQ for incoming rural residents.
The world is our oyster, we want to help promote rural medicine and create unity for residents across Canada!

Dr. Xiu-Mei (Sue-May) Zhang was born and raised in China. She graduated from the Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences (Ji Lin University) and worked at an Internal Medicine Department in a general hospital in Beijing. In 1991, Dr. Zhang moved to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, with her husband Jim. They began their lives in Canada, working as acupuncturists at Dr. Branigan Clinic. During their initial years, they faced tremendous challenges with the immigration department. Thanks to continuous support from the northern communities, they were finally able to become landed immigrants, after an extended 3 year battle.

Choosing Wisely Canada - SRPC's List of Recommendations
The SRPC released it's first Choosing Wisely Canada list of recommendations today on September 16th.
The five recommendations focus on virtual care and the importance of reducing unnecessary medical travel. Internationally, this is the only known rural-focused Choosing Wisely recommendation list. An op-ed was published in the Toronto Star September 28th. A special thank-you to Alexandra Dozzi, Kathleen Walsh and Dr. Margaret Tromp for your commitment to making this possible. |

Invitation to Participate in a Research Project - Doctors’ Experiences of COVID-19 and Clinical Courage
At times doctors have to work at the limits of their scope of practice in order to meet the needs of their patients. This takes courage. This project builds on our work to understand the experience of clinical courage as perceived by rural doctors. We are seeking to broaden our understanding of clinical courage by exploring how doctors practice during times of significant stress such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This study is being undertaken by the following research team: Lucie Walters, Jill Konkin, Ruth Stewart, Ian Couper, Susan Williams and David Campbell.
If you are working as a rural doctor and have experience with preparing for and treating COVID-19 patients and are comfortable to be interviewed in English, then we invite you to participant in our study.
