Mentor Program
The SRPC Mentor Program connects medical students, residents, IMG’s, and new-to-practice physicians with experienced rural physicians across Canada, offering opportunities for mentorship, career exploration, and meaningful insight into the diverse scope of rural medicine.
Goals of the Program
- Connect learners with rural physicians across Canada
- Support rural career exploration and guidance
- Increase understanding of the scope of rural practice
- Provide learning opportunities outside of the formal academic environment
- Contribute to the current and growing need of rural physicians in Canada
How It Works
- Apply online as a Mentor or Mentee
- Applications are reviewed by SRPC
- Participants are matched based on interests, goals and availability
- Mentorship is flexible and self-directed

Help inspire and support the next generation of rural physicians by offering valuable learning experiences outside of traditional academic settings.
Mentor Role
As an SRPC mentor, you will be paired with medical learners seeking insight into rural medicine and guidance in exploring rural practice opportunities. Once connected, mentor-mentee relationships can be tailored to fit individual needs and availability — whether that means answering occasional questions, providing ongoing mentorship, or arranging opportunities to learn more about your practice and career path.
Expectations

- Being honest and open regarding the rewards/challenges to rural medicine
- Forming a plan and setting expectations with your mentee regarding frequency of meetings and meeting platform to be used
- Sharing appropriate resources
- Recognizing that advice given, while extremely valuable, does not substitute for MD program-specific mentorship and supports

Supporting International Medical Graduates in Rural Practice
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) play an essential role in strengthening Canada’s rural and remote health care workforce. The program includes dedicated mentorship support to help IMGs transition into rural practice.
Mentors may be matched with IMGs seeking guidance on:
- Canadian healthcare systems
- Rural practice opportunities
- Clinical and professional transition
- Establishing rural practice in Canada
