Call for Applications – Managing Editor, Canadian Journal of Rural Medicine (CJRM)
The Society of Rural Physicians of Canada (SRPC) is seeking a Managing Editor for the Canadian Journal of Rural Medicine (CJRM) as our long-serving Managing Editor prepares for retirement.
CJRM is Canada’s national rural medicine journal and publishes quarterly issues featuring original research, editorials, case reports, clinical articles, and commentary relevant to rural and remote healthcare.
This is a part-time contract position, requiring approximately 160–170 hours annually (roughly equivalent to 4–5 full-time work weeks per year). The role is fully remote and primarily conducted through email and the journal’s online manuscript management system. This is best suited to someone looking to develop a long-term editorial relationship with the publication.
Key Responsibilities
The Managing Editor is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the journal’s editorial workflow, including:
- Managing manuscript submissions and peer review through the online Medknow platform
- Coordinating with the Scientific Editor, reviewers, authors, and production staff
- Conducting content editing and some copyediting of accepted manuscripts using Microsoft Word (depending on production arrangements)
- Preparing manuscripts for publication and overseeing issue assembly
- Proofreading quarterly journal issues before publication
- Coordinating French translations for editorials and abstracts
- Responding to journal correspondence
- Selecting cover artwork for each issue and coordinating artists’ publication agreements
- Supporting the overall production schedule for four issues annually
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate will have:
- Excellent knowledge of medical editing and scientific research protocols
- A background in the sciences, medicine, health research, publishing, or a related field
- Exceptional written communication skills and a strong command of Canadian English grammar and syntax
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, including Track Changes and document editing
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously
- Experience coordinating with authors, reviewers, editors, and external production teams
- Comfortable learning and navigating online editorial management systems
- Excellent attention to detail and proofreading abilities
- The ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- A willingness to support and expand the journal’s reviewer database
- An appreciation for visual quality and the ability to select appropriate cover artwork with a rural theme
Assets:
- Experience with academic, medical, or scientific publishing
- Familiarity with peer review and scholarly publishing processes
- French language proficiency, particularly for proofreading translated abstracts and editorials
- Bilingualism (English/French)
Training and transition support will be provided.
Compensation
This is a contracted editorial position with compensation anticipated in the range of $15,000–$20,000 CAD annually, commensurate with experience and responsibilities, and reflecting the cyclical nature of quarterly journal production.
