Understanding the Non-Insured Health Benefits - Guide for Rural Healthcare Providers
INTRODUCTION
As rural physicians and residents who provide services across many
Indigenous communities, it is imperative for us to step up in addressing
systemic racism and support cultural sensitivity. We hope this brief
guide about the Non-insured Health Benefits (NIHB) will help you learn
more about how you can provide culturally safe and quality care to your
Indigenous patients.
The Society of Rural
Physicians of Canada (SRPC) acknowledges and pays respect to the many
First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and their traditional
territories. As we work in rural and remote communities across Canada,
we recognize the many difficult challenges that Indigenous people face
that impact their health and social well-being.
We
ask readers to self-reflect on what we must strive to learn, actively
listen to Indigenous patients and community members, help identify
injustices and inequities, as well as advocate for change in policies
and laws negatively impacting Indigenous patients as part of our journey
to reconciliation and anti-racism.
