Description:

Rural clinicians often manage environmental injuries due to rural communities' proximity to outdoor recreational areas and remote industrial sites.  Cold-induced emergencies include hypothermia, hypothermic arrest, and frostbite.  Mortality from hypothermia is higher in rural communities.  Recent developments, however, have improved the morbidity and mortality of individuals with these severe injuries.  This presentation will cover the assessment and management of patients with cold-induced emergencies in a rural/remote context.

Objectives:

  • Accurately classify cold-induced emergencies to determine their severity and the appropriate management.
  • Describe the appropriate management of cold-induced emergencies in a rural/remote context.
  • Describe some of the unique challenges that arise from managing cold-induced emergencies in rural/remote contexts.

Presenter:

Dr. Dave Jerome is a physician with the Canadian Armed Forces.  He completed a rural FM residency at NOSM University, and an additional year of EM training at Queen's University.  He was the Founding-President of the Canadian Association of Wilderness Medicine (CAWM), and continues to serve on the CAWM Board of Directors.  He has presented at a number of national conference and on the EMCases Podcast on many topics related to environmental and wilderness medicine.
