Our first (and hopefully last) virtual conference is on the books!  While we made the best of a virtual world, we realize the social interactions and networking events were missed by all.  We are now aware of the advantages of a virtual conference, which we hope to incorporate at our next in-person event.  We are counting down the days!

Rural Road Map: Report Card on Access to Health Care in Rural Canada

Since its formation in 2018, the Rural Road Map Implementation Committee (RRMIC) has made important contributions to enhancing access to care for people living in rural and remote areas of Canada.  Our work is based on the four priority areas identified in the Rural Road Map for Action—social accountability, policy interventions, best practice models, and rural research. 

In this report card we highlight key activities that RRMIC’s partner and stakeholder organizations have undertaken that advance these priorities. We provide an overall assessment of progress made on the 20 actions that form the framework of the Rural Road Map. In 2021 we are exploring what comes next in our drive to ensure everyone in Canada has access to the care they need close to home.

Call to Action: An Approach to Patient Transfers for Those Living in Rural and Remote Communities in Canada

For many people in Canada who live in rural and remote communities, accessing high‐quality, coordinated, and timely health care is a challenge. The SRPC and the CFPC are addressing this issue in a new consensus paper that highlights the need for more efficient patient transfers to and from hospitals and other medical facilities for people in rural and remote communities, including those living in Indigenous communities.

CAEP - National Licensure Consensus Statement

Now into the third wave of COVID-19, Canada faces a severe healthcare crisis. A major obstacle for provinces is the lack of skilled personnel in both rural and urban communities. There are more healthcare workers available to help but we are limited to working in the province where we are licensed. We need to be able to provide help wherever it is needed in Canada.

CAEP has started a House of Commons petition to the Minister of Health regarding national licensure. Please sign and share broadly.

We Are Ready to Launch Our Mentorship Program!

Are you a student, resident, or new to practice and looking for a mentor?  We can help!

The SRPC mentorship program is a pilot program that aims to connect learners with rural interests to rural physicians and residents from across the country to allow career exploration, guidance, and increased understanding of the scope of rural practice. 

Your mentor-mentee relationships can be tailored on an individual basis. This may include answering a few quick questions, setting up a longitudinal mentorship plan, or organizing shadowing experiences (public health guidelines permitting).
