Continuing professional development 

ENHANCED SURGICAL SKILLS BANFF JANUARY 15-16, 2020 

The SRPC ESS Banff conference is a networking and skills event held every two years.  This year it will be at held at the Rimrock Resort Hotel, Banff, AB the evening of January 15th and the day of January 16th. The program this year is case-based with small groups and includes: Rural Trauma - Roles for ESS/OSS, Sims in Your Home OR, Does rural surgery make the cut? Are we good enough? and Hernias and other Surgical Pearls.  OR nurses are encouraged to attend and apply for bursary support.  

The pre-course is SOS for PPH - The dreaded Cesarean Hysterectomy Course hi-fidelity simulation with limited spots.  

The Banff Endoscopy program run by the Alberta Society of Endoscopic Practice often runs at the same time and location as the ESS/OSS CME program.

THE SRPC RURAL AND REMOTE CONFERENCE




The annual SRPC rural and remote conference includes an ESS/OSS STREAM. Next year's conference is April 23rd - 25th in Ottawa, Ontario.

SRPC ESS COMMITTEE



The SRPC has convened a standing Committee on CPD for ESS/OSS with its first chairperson, Dr. Ryan Falk (rgfalk@gmail.com) from Inuvik, NWT.

Members are:

Past CPD courses include the laparoscopic salpingectomy training program (2017 course above) for a total of 16 physicians in 2017 and 2018 that was funded by the Rural Education Action Plan and coordinated by the Rural Coordination Centre of BC.

GLOBAL HEALTH CPD




The ESS CPD International Subcommittee is developing partnerships with communities to pair surgical services with support for local surgical capacity.  The goal is for ESS practitioners to provide surgical services in a higher volume setting paired with teaching local medical learners.

The Canadian Network of International Surgery partnered with SRPC on the Structured Operative Obstetrics Instructors' Course in 2018.  CNIS also partnered with SRPC on the Structured Hernia Repair Instructors' Course in 2019.
